A few months back, I asked the following question of my readers: Would you like Rediscovering the Way to continue to focus only on spiritual formation and character, or to also include content about the common good (social, cultural, and political issues from a Christian perspective)? Out of those who replied, 87% said yes - they also wanted content related to the common good. I haven’t done much of this kind of writing here since then, the main example being a post on JD Vance and the ethics of Christian love for others a few months back.
I don’t want this Substack to become a place with quick reactions to the news of the day. There is such a rush to react, to get content out now when some issue takes center stage in the real world and online. Often, quality is sacrificed to currency (in terms of both time and money). I want to avoid giving in to this, and to the pressure to write about the controversy of the day, whatever it is. I really want what I write here to be helpful to others. That’s one of the primary goals of Rediscovering the Way.
So when there is something in our national conversation that is related to the things my research, writing, and speaking focus on, I’ll likely chime in as I did in the JD Vance post. But I’ll do my best to exercise some wisdom and not chase headlines or controversies for the sake of being current or getting more clicks. I want to write about issues I’ve devoted significant time to read, study, and reflect on. Regarding those issues, if I think I have something helpful to say on something of personal, social, political, or cultural significance for followers of the Way, I’ll do so. You may disagree with what I say, in fact, I would expect that to be the case at least some of the time! But hopefully we can learn from each other and grow together, even if we disagree. That’s the way to move forward, I think.
As always, thanks for reading!
I appreciate all the wisdom you have to share, seriously. I like the approach and the restraint. It is good for all our souls.
