Well, not humility’s birthday, exactly, but today is the one-year anniversary of the publication of my favorite book (only of those I’ve written - if it was my favorite of all books that would not be, well, humble). The book is Humility: Rediscovering the Way of Love and Life in Christ.
The book is focused on humility, but it is more than just a discussion of this vital Christian virtue. It is actually a book about spiritual formation in Christ. With a biblically and theologically grounded understanding of humility (and love), I go on to discuss ways we can cultivate and practice these virtues in our homes, churches, and communities. The need for followers of the Way of Jesus to exemplify humble love is great. By our love for one another (John 13), our unity with one another (John 17), and our imitation of the humility of Jesus (Philippians 2), we can help others see the reality of Christ and his humble love for them. We can better serve God and his kingdom.
My hope and prayer for this book is that it will help readers not only understand what humility is, but actually grow in this virtue as they become more deeply united to one another and Christ. Plus, what other book includes a discussion of Bonhoeffer, Bonaventure, and Bono?
I recently found out that the book is a finalist for the Dallas Willard Research Center Book Award, given each year by the Martin Center at Westmont College. The competition is stiff - the other 4 finalists include some excellent books by Michael Wear, John Mark Comer, Tyler VanderWeele, and Rich Villodas. Check these titles out, too!
If you’ve already read the book and found it helpful, a review at Amazon or Goodreads, or a quick shout-out about it on social media would be much appreciated. Or better yet tell a friend about it in a face-to-face conversation. Thanks!
